Started providing municipal services under the Municipality of Sefaköy throughout the years of graduate studies.
1981
Took on the position of Assistant Manager in the Municipal Branch Directorate of Küçükçekmece, Municipality of İstanbul which he took a part in founding.
1984
While serving as the Deputy Director of Municipal Branch of Küçükçekmece, he participated in the association and organization of the district municipality of Bakırköy Municipality as per the legislative decree no 3330 which was a first time implementation under the organization of Metropolitan Municipality.
1986
Assigned to the office of deputy mayor of the Municipality of Büyükçekmece.
1988
Conducted extensive research and studies by attending the "Urbanism and Municipal Management" training program of the Middle East Public Administration Institute between 1979 and 1988.
1992
Completed his master's degree at Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration with his thesis on "Analysis of Municipalities and Their Budgets".
1994
Elected as the Mayor of Büyükçekmece in 1994. Examined the structures of local governments in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and France between 1989-1994. Solved the historical problem of infrastructure in Büyükçekmece in a short period of 18 months which has not been solved for over 40 years. During this period, he created the development plan for the entire city. He prevented squatting and illegal construction in the city.
1996
Completed his doctoral dissertation on "Urbanism and Coastal Zone Management" at Istanbul University Institute of Marine Sciences and was awarded the title of "PhD". Gifted the Tüyap Fair and Congress Center - the largest indoor exhibition-convention center- along with Türkiye's first and only TV tower to our region.
1999
Elected as the Mayor of Büyükçekmece for the second time. Conducted major projects by making great investments in infrastructure and education.
2004
Elected as the Mayor of Büyükçekmece for the third time. Throughout this period, transformed Büyükçekmece into a completely modern and contemporary world city. Served as the President of Marmara Municipalities Union between December 14, 2002 and June 19, 2004. Currently holds the Turkish Delegation Membership in the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Board Membership in the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye and the Council membership in the Marmara Municipalities Union.
2009
In 2009, elected as the Mayor of the new Büyükçekmece district for the 4th time which was formed by the merger of Büyükçekmece, Mimarsinan, Kumburgaz, Tepecik, Muratbey, Celaliye-Kamiloba municipalities and Gürpınar and Pınartepe neighborhoods in accordance with the law No 5747.
Placed great importance in education with the motto of “The foundation of our cities is the infrastructure and the foundation of our future is the education”. During his period he dedicated 36 schools, 12 multi-purpose halls and a teacher's lodge to national education. He contributed to the establishment of 4 foundation universities in Büyükçekmece.
During this 5-year service period, worked hard in with his team to complete the infrastructure deficiencies of the towns newly connected to Büyükçekmece and bring them to the level of Büyükçekmece in all aspects.
2012
As a result of its works in urban planning services, social municipalism and culture and art activities, Büyükçekmece received the Council of Europe “12 Star Cities” award for the first time.
2014
Dr. Hasan Akgün was re-elected as the Mayor of Büyükçekmece in the elections held on March 30, 2014. Striving for Büyükçekmece to become a modern world city since 1994, declared to maintain the modern urbanism concept developed throughout the 5-year period. Dr. Akgün prepared plans for Büyükçekmece to carry the European standard that it has achieved so far in both urbanization investments and culture and education fields further in this period.
It was decided that Büyükçekmece, which set an example in Turkey in terms of healthy and modern urbanization between 2014 and 2019, should maintain this feature and continue to make investments that will further increase people's quality of life. During this period, it was decided to prioritize new investments that shall contribute to the economic welfare of the people. The successful achievements of Mayor Hasan Akgün in Büyükçekmece recognized all over the world.
Dr. Hasan Akgün, Mayor of Büyükçekmece, was elected as the honorary president of the International Dance Festivals Federation (FIDAF). Such title was awarded for his contribution to the world culture by continuing the International Büyükçekmece Culture and Art Festival with great success for 15 years. Dr. Akgün currently holds the Turkish Delegation Membership in the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Board Membership in the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye and the Council membership in the Union of Municipalities of Marmara.
2018
In 2018, Büyükçekmece Municipality received 12 Star Award of the Council of Europe for the 7th time. Büyükçekmece Municipality is the only municipality in Türkiye that has been awarded this title seven times consecutively. At the same year, « the Flag of Honor » was received by the Council of Europe.
2019
Elected as the Mayor of Büyükçekmece for the 6th time in the elections held on March 31, 2019.
2021
Continuity award was given by the International Photographic Art Federation for the 21 years continuation of the International Güler Ertan Photography Art Contest. The European Plaque of Honor award was received by the Council of Europe. Honorary Festival award given by CIOFF and FIDAF. Büyükçekmece Culture and Art Festival was selected as the “Best Festival in the World” in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 by the CIOFF [International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts]. (The Festival is Türkiye's first CIOFF member and the only one in category A.) Büyükçekmece Municipality Golden Bridge Folk Dance Ensemble was awarded the world’s number one prize with the full scores by 19 countries in the International Folk Dance Competition held in Cheonan by FIDAF [Federation of International Dance Festivals] in 2016. In 2018, the International Büyükçekmece Culture and Art Festival received the "World's Best Culture and Art Festival" award for the 7th time. The award was presented to Hasan Akgün by Koo Bon Young, president of the Federation of International Dance Festivals (FIDAF), at the World Dance Festival held in Cheonan, South Korea.
