BACKGROUND

Büyükçekmece Municipality was founded on 19 February 1958 as a sub-district. It used to be an agriculture and countryside town but after 1980, it was overbuilt rapidly and parallel to this development, the population has also increased.

Büyükçekmece, which became a district on July 4, 1987, is today a modern European town as a result of the urbanization move (sewage and rain water network, wastewater treatment plants, parks and landscaping, underground energy and communication lines, lighting, completion of zoning plans) that started from 1994.

As per the 2nd temporary article of Metropolitan Law dated July 23, 2004 and numbered 5216, it has been taken under the scope of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

2nd article 1st sub paragraph of “Law on Establishment of a District within the boundaries of Metropolitan Municipality and making amendments on some laws” numbered 5747; it is said that “legal entity statuses of First Level Municipalities whose names are mentioned in the attached (42) numbered list, which are located within the boundaries of the Metropolitan Municipality, to be removed and added to the District Municipalities mentioned in the same list together with their neighborhoods or neighborhood sections” and as per this article, legal entity statuses of Tepecik, Mimarsinan and Kumburgaz First Level Municipalities which are under Büyükçekmece District and Muratbey under Çatalca district and Celaliye, Kamiloba under Silivri district, were removed and they are taken under Büyükçekmece District Municipality together with their neighborhoods.
