Mayor Akgün been to Strasbourg to Represent Türkiye

Mayor of Büyükçekmece Dr. Hasan Akgün went to Strasbourg France for Council of Europe Local and Regional Authorities.

At the 43rd General Assembly of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, which will be held between 25-27 October, matters of Russia's war against Ukraine, local and regional democracy in Belgium, Denmark, Czech Republic and Sweden, human rights and environment, women and child refugees will be discussed.

Russia – Ukraine War will be discussed

At the Congress, addressing and information sharing of the President of Ukraine Volodymir Zelensky, Minister of Communities and Regions Development Oleksiy Chernyshov and Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko to the congress members is expected.

Observer Reports of the Local Elections will be in the Agenda

Another topic in the agenda of the 43rd General Assembly will be about the reports on the application of European Charter for Local and Self Government in Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark and Sweden. Congress members will discuss about the observer reports on recent local elections in Serbia as well as some municipalities in Albania and reports on observation of local elections in the Netherlands. Also, the draft approval of the revised referendum good practice rules adopted by the Venice Commission and the Council for Democratic Elections will be discussed.

General Secretaries will be elected

A report on “A fundamental environmental right: a matter for local and regional governments” will be discussed at the Congress to promote environmental reading of the European Charter of Local Self-Government and adapt local governance to environmental challenges. Members will also discuss about the effects of regional identities, hate speech and fake news on local and regional elected representatives’ working conditions, reports on smart cities and regions for a human rights based approach. At the opening session of the 43rd plenary session, which will also include youth delegates, within the scope of the “Rejuvenate Politics” initiative, members of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities will elect their new Secretary General for a five-year term.
